Abstract

990,181. Bleaching cellulosic materials. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 5, 1962 [Feb. 7,1961], No.4350/62. Headings D1L and D1P. Cellulosic textiles are bleached by a continuous, high-speed process at a rate of at least 5, 000 yards by a process comprising:- (A) continuously passing them through a dilute aqueous solution of a mineral acid having a concentration by weight of 0.1-2.0% and expressing the acid solution to 90-120% by weight of the textiles, (B) retaining them in an acidification zone for 5-60 minutes to effect uniform acidification of the solution on the textiles, (C) continuously washing them to remove excess acid and to produce textiles wet with a solution containing 0.01-0.25% of acid based on their dry weight, (D) continuously passing them through an acid aqueous solution containing 1-50 grams per litre of sodium chlorite at a pH of 3-5 at a temperature between room temperature and 110‹F. and expressing all but 90-120% of the aqueous bleaching solution to provide textiles wet with 0.1-1.5% of sodium chlorite based on their dry weight and (E) retaining them in a bleaching zone at a pH lower than 4 for 10-120 minutes at 180‹-212‹F. Suitable mineral acids are sulphic, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids. The bleaching solution may also contain sodium nitrate in the proportion of more than one mole of sodium nitrate per mole of sodium chlorite and 0.1-1% by weight of a surface-active agent, e.g. salts of acyl alkyl taurides, sulphated alcohols or alkyl aryl sulphonates. Fabrics comprising cotton, linen, jute, hemp or regenerated cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with nylon, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres may be treated. In the apparatus preferably used to carry out the process the fabric is passed through acid saturator 11, excess acid is remove by squeeze rollers 16 and the fabric is stacked into the longer arm of S-shoot 19 to provide time for the acidification of the fabric. It'is then washed in washers 22 and 25 squeezed by rollers 28 and passed through saturator 30 into which the chlorite solution is introduced via line 31. It is then squeezed by rollers 32 and held in the longer arm of S-shoot 35 heated by steam either by means of a jacket or direct steam lines (not shown) where bleaching takes place.
