Abstract

552,711. Bleaching textiles. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. Sept. 17, 1941, No. 11928. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1940. [Class 15 (ii)] Cellulosic textiles, e.g. fabrics, or yarns twisted together, of cotton, linen, rayon, or cotton and wool, or rayon and silk, are impregnated with an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite and thereupon treated with steam. The sodium chlorite solution may be acidified with acetic or any mineral acid such as phosphoric, or may be made alkaline by sodium hydroxide or other alkali, and a detergent may be used, preferably one active at the pH value of the solution, thus, soaps may be used in alkaline solutions and sulphated or sulphonated organic compounds in acid solutions. Preferably both an alkali and an acid sodium chlorite and steam treatments are given. In an example, cotton greige broadcloth was singed, dried, subjected to 2 per cent. sulphuric acid for 5 mins., stood for 3 hrs., washed in warm and then cold water, impregnated with a solution of sodium chlorite, sodium hydrate, and sodium ocenol sulphate, excess solution drained, steamed for ¢ hr., washed in hot and cold water, soured using acetic acid, washed, dried, mercerized, washed, again soured and washed and impregnated with a solution of sodium chlorite, acetic acid, and sodium ocenol sulphate, again steamed and washed in hot and cold water and dried. The invention is applicable to fabric containing pre-dyed threads. Specification 552,567 is referred to.
