Abstract

Textile material, composed wholly or partly of wool or of other animal fibres, is rendered resistant to felting and shrinking, when washed in aqueous liquids, by impregnating it with a compound of copper, nickel, silver, or mercury, and subsequently impregnating it with a solution of a peroxide or peroxy compound, e.g. a peroxide of hydrogen, alkali-metal, or alkaline earth metal, or a perborate or percarbonate of an alkali metal. The wool material may be in the form of loose fibres, slubbings, tops, roving, yarn, knitted or woven fabric, or garments. It may be treated in oily state or after scouring. The metal compound greatly increases the shrink-proofing effect of the peroxy compound. When cellulosic fibres are present with the wool, it is preferred to use a nickel compound. The proportion of metal compound required is very small and may be as low as 0.001 per cent for copper or nickel, 0.03 per cent for silver, and 0.05 per cent for mercury based on the weight of wool. The solution of peroxy compound may be used at a pH of 3 to 10.5. The treatment may be used to effect a bleaching of the materials as well as shrink-proofing, and it is then preferred to use a copper or nickel compound and to carry out the treatment with the peroxy compound under alkaline conditions. A final treatment with acidified sodium bisulphite solution may be given to assist in removal of the metal compound from the fibres and to enhance whiteness of the material. In an example, wool fabric is impregnated with a very dilute solution of copper sulphate at 75 DEG C. The fabric is removed and a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and sodium silicate is added to the liquor which has been cooled to 50 DEG C. The fabric is again entered in the liquor and treated for an hour. It is then placed in water containing a small proportion of sodium bisulphite and sulphuric acid, and then washed and dried. In other examples, nickel sulphate, copper acetate, silver nitrate and mercuric acetate are used for the pre-treatment, and sodium perborate and sodium percarbonate are used for the peroxy compound treatment. When using hydrogen peroxide, the pH may be adjusted by means of tri-sodium phosphate, sodium acetate, or tetra-sodium pyrophosphate.
