Abstract

552,259. Reducing shrinkage in textiles; dyeing. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Sept. 20, 1941, No. 12196. Convention date, Jan. 30. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Shrinkage of fabrics composed of organic derivatives of cellulose is reduced by treating them at 80‹C. with an aqueous solution containing 60 to 90 grams per litre of a neutral salt such as sodium, potassium, or magnesium sulphate, chloride, or nitrate which normally has no swelling action on, or which inhibits the swelling of said fibres. The treatment may be combined with a scouring treatment by incorporating a dispersing agent such as the salt of a sulphated fatty alcohol (3 grams per litre), or with a dyeing treatment by first carrying out the shrinkage and scouring treatment in a jig for say 1 hour and then adding a solution of the dyestuff and continuing the treatment. Alternatively the fabric may first be treated to reduce shrinkage and to scour it, and then be jig-dyed in a dyebath, containing 75 grams per litre Glaubers' salt and 3 grams per litre sulphated fatty alcohol.
