Abstract
513,919. Shrink-resisting treatments. WOOLINDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, PHILLIPS, H., and MIDDLEBROOK, W. R. April 21, 1938, No. 11980. [Class 15 (ii)] Wool or materials comprising wool are treated with an animal or vegetable protease, preferably together with an activator, to diminish shrinkage. Preferred protease and activators are trypsin with sodium sulphide, or papain with sodium bisulphite. The treatment is preferably continued until the wool has lost 1-3 per cent. by weight. Other additions to the bath are urea, cysteine, and an alkali electrolyte for adjustment of the pH value. Fabric may be milled during the liquid treatment. In examples : (1) scoured loose wool is treated in a warm bath containing papain, sodium bisulphite and sodium carbonate at pH 6.7, rinsed, hydroextracted and dried. (2) Scoured wool fabric is treated in a solution of trypsin, sodium sulphide and ammonium chloride, rinsed and dried. In other examples, sodium hydroxide replaces sodium carbonate in example (1).
