Abstract

Materials composed wholly or partly of wool are shrink-proofed by treating them with an aqueous bath of permonosulphuric acid or a salt thereof having a pH value of 7-12 and containing at least 2 grams per litre of an alkali metal chloride or sulphate. The woollen materials may be in hank or package form or in the form of woven or knitted goods. The pH of the solution may be adjusted by the addition of an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or phosphate. The bath may also contain a surface active agent, e.g. a non-ionic surface active agent or sodium lauryl sulphate, if unscoured woollen materials are being treated. The woollen materials may first be immersed in the treating bath at a temperature not exceeding 25 DEG C. and the temperature then raised to above 35 DEG C. Alternatively the materials may first be wetted out in an aqueous solution containing the surface active agent and then treated with the bath containing the permonosulphuric acid or salt thereof and alkali metal chloride or sulphate.
