Abstract

Keratinic fibres, e.g. wool, are treated with an alkali metal salt of N-dichloroisocyanuric acid by process in which the treatment is carried out in a first stage by means of an aqueous solution of the salt of N-dichloroisocyanuric acid of pH value 6-8 and in a second stage by means of an aqueous solution of the salt of N-dichloroisocyanuric acid having a pH value which is on the acid side of neutrality and is lower than the pH value of the solution used in the first stage, to improve their resistance to felting The treatment may be effected by acidifying the solution which has been used for the first stage treatment, e.g. with hydrochloric acid, and using it for the second stage treatment. The pH of the bath during the second stage preferably lies between 1 and 4. The amount of active chlorine consumed in the first stage is preferably not less than half and not more than three quarters of the total amount of active chlorine required for the entire treatment. The concentration of N-dichloroisocyanuric acid salt in the solution may be such that the active chlorine content of the solution is 2-6% by weight of the fibres treated and the ratio by weight of fibres being treated to the treating solution may be between 1:5 and 1:60. The treatment may be carried out at 5 DEG - 35 DEG C for a total time of 20-90 minutes. The treating solution may also contain an anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface - active agent, e.g. a condensate of ethylene oxide with lauryl alcohol, and the fibres may subsequently be dechlorinated with sodium bisulphite or hydrosulphite. The fibres may be in the form of wadding, combed or carded ribbon, yarn, woven or knitted goods or made-up articles.
