Abstract

1392981 Treating cotton fibres F MANOR 5 April 1972 15564/72 Heading D1P At least part of the non-cellulosic substances present in cotton fibres are extracted from the primary wall and between the day growth rings underlying the primary wall of the fibres which are then mercerized in a strongly alkaline bath and subsequently treated with a synthetic resin, e.g. for creaseproofing. The extraction may be effected by scouring and bleaching. Mercerization may be carried out with or without tension, or with the fibres initially slack followed by the application of tension before and optionally after neutralization. The alkaline solution may be in the vicinity of its saturation point and is preferably a 43% sodium hydroxide solution. The resin may be dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea. The cotton fibres may be blended with synthetic fibres.
