Abstract

Wool and wool-containing fabrics are treated with an aqueous solution containing permonosulphuric acid or salts thereof and a permanganate at a pH below 11 in order to reduce their felting and shrinking tendencies. The process may be carried out batchwise in dilute solutions of the reagents containing approximately 0,05% by weight, or continuously with more concentrated solutions containing 0,4% by weight or more of the reagents, which may be mixed together in a single bath or applied consecutively by passing the material first through the permanganate bath and then through the permonosulphuric bath. The wool or fabric may subsequently be treated with an aqueous solution of a bleaching agent, such as sulphurous acid or a salt thereof in the presence of formic acid, or hydrogen peroxide. The treatment is preferably carried out at temperatures between 10 DEG and 40 DEG C. The Provisional Specification states that the permanganate treatment may follow the permonosulphuric acid treatment.
