Abstract
In depilating and bleaching hides and skins, they are subjected to the action of a per-acid, or a salt thereof, and subsequently treated with an alkaline base or salt, such as ammonium sulphate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, sodium phosphate or sodium hydrogen phosphate. Suitable per-acids are: Caro's acid (H2SO5) and per-acetic acid. The hides and skins may be treated, in a tank rotating at 2 to 5 r.p.m., with an aqueous liquor containing between 5 and 15 per cent of Caro's acid, or a Caroate, or between 0.5 and 5 per cent of peracetic acid, based on the weight of the hides and skins, or on the total weight of liquor. Removal of hair is facilitated by such treatment, because the hair is oxidized and made soluble in water.
