685,786. Treating wood with liquids. ORTH, R. June 6, 1950. [June 16, 1949] No. 14122/50. Class 140. In a process for bleaching wood, colouring matter localised in the elementary substance of the wood membranes, or in "blued" wood in the membranes of the hyphen mould, is treated with an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide as a swelling agent and is thereby rendered more accessible to a subsequent bleaching by peroxides e.g. hydrogen peroxide, the swelling agent effecting an accelerated splitting off of the oxygen from oxygen-carriers.
