Abstract
Mechanical wood pulp is bleached by a treatment with 0.1 to 1.75 per cent of active chlorine based on the weight of dry pulp, followed by alkaline peroxide to brighten the pulp, e.g. with 0.25 to 10 per cent volume alkaline peroxide based on the dry pulp. The treatment with chlorine may be carried out at a pH of 3.5 to 9.0. The active chlorine may be used as an aqueous solution of chlorine or slightly acid, neutral or slightly alkaline solutions of a hypochlorite. In the examples, mechanical wood pulp is treated with a solution containing 0.5 per cent of active chlorine, calculated on the basis of dry pulp at a pH of 6.0 or 5.9, followed by an alkaline peroxide solution containing 2 per cent of 100-volume hydrogen peroxide, calculated on the basis of dry pulp, silicate of soda and sodium hydroxide.
