Abstract
Chemical pulp such as sulphate or sulphite pulp is bleached in two stages, firstly with hypochlorite to a brightness greater than 65 expressed as percentage reflectance, and then, at a pulp concentration not less than 30 per cent and at a temperature below 130 DEG F., with alkaline peroxide, the total alkalinity of which is 0.3 to 3.25 per cent calculated as NaOH and based on the dry weight of the fibre. The amount of peroxide used is 0.1 to 1.5 per cent calculated as H2O2 and based on the dry weight of the fibre. In examples: (1) conventionally bleached sulphite pulp of brightness 82.6 is de-watered to 50 per cent pulp density and bleached at room temperature by adding 1 per cent hydrogen peroxide, 4 per cent sodium silicate and 1 per cent caustic soda calculated on the dry pulp; (2) partially bleached sulphate pulp of brightness 70.3 is treated at density 45 per cent as in (1); (3) partially bleached hardwood sulphite pulp of brightness 75.5 is bleached at a pulp density of 45 per cent as in (1); (4) partially-bleached sulphite pulp of brightness 73.1 is bleached at a pulp density of 32 per cent with 0.5 per cent hydrogen peroxide, 4 per cent silicate and 0.5 per cent caustic soda at room temperature; and (5) partially bleached sulphate pulp of brightness 68.5 is bleached at a pulp density of 45 per cent as in (1). Instead of caustic soda, other alkalis such as trisodium phosphate, sodium carbonate, sodium silicate and sodium pyrophosphate may be used. Peroxide stabilizers such as sodium silicate and magnesium sulphate may also be present.
