Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials are bleached by treatment with an alkaline solution of an alkali metal chlorite, e.g. sodium chlorite and a hypochlorite, e.g. sodium or calcium hypochlorite. The solution advantageoysly contains 1 to 3 grams of available chlorine per litre, the ratio of hypochlorite to chlorite being preferably about 1.5 to 1, based on the available chlorine and the preferred pH value of the solution being between 8.7 and 10.0. The process described and claimed in Specification 519,522, wherein chlorine is introduced into a chlorite bleaching liquor, is disclaimed. The required pH value may be obtained by addition of sodium carbonate and/or bicarbonate. The material to be bleached is advantageously subjected to a preliminary kier-boiling followed by washing, souring with sulphuric acid or aqueous sulphur dioxide and again washing, and, after treatment with the bleaching solution, the material is squeezed, washed, soured, e.g. with aqueous sulphur dioxide, washed and finished. Various examples of the bleaching process, employing temperatures up to 80 DEG F. are given.
