Abstract
Cellulosic textiles are impregnated with an aqueous solution of a chlorite and a hypochlorite and are then subjected to a steaming operation in the presence of so much of the solution as is retained by the textiles. The preferred ratio range of hypochlorite to chlorite in the solution is from about 0.5 : 1 to 4 : 1. Where the available chlorine concentration of the solution is from 2.5 to 3 grams per litre and the pH is not less than 7 and preferably from 9 to 11. The steaming temperature is preferably within the range of about 100 DEG to about 212 DEG F. The cellulosic textiles may be impregnated with caustic soda, steamed and washed prior to the treatment.
