Abstract

Alginic acid is bleached with chlorine dioxide in a strongly acid solution, preferably at a pH not greater than 3. The alginic acid may be in a concentration of about 20 per cent based on the dry weight, and the bleaching may be carried out at a temperature between 15 DEG and 50 DEG C.
