Abstract

Sand is deferruginated by agitation, preferably at a speed that the sand is maintained in suspension, with a dilute aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid containing hydrosulphurous acid or an at least sparingly-soluble hydrosulphite, e.g. Na2S2O4. Iron-containing particles may be removed by froth flotation before or after the agitation, the time of which does not exceed 10 minutes. The aqueous solution contains, e.g., 0.02 to 1.0 per cent of HF and 0.02 to 0.2 per cent of Na2S2O4. Specifications 555,241 and 634,479 are referred to.
