Abstract
Silica gel is produced by impelling fine droplets of a silicate solution into an acid solution maintained in a condition of high turbulence. The silicate solution may be added to the acid, which may be in excess of that required to neutralize the silicate, at a high rate at first and subsequently at a low rate. The acid and silicate solutions, the concentrations of which may be high enough to result in a gel containing at least 15 per cent of silica, may be cooled to below room temperature before mixing.
