Abstract
In the manufacture of acid tooth pastes containing silica gel a mixture of the ingredients is subjected to a colloidal grinding at an increased temperature not greater than 70 DEG C. for the purpose of causing the gel to assume the liquid state during the grinding whereby air is prevented from entering the mass. The invasion of air is prevented to an increased degree by performing the colloidal grinding in an inert atmosphere soluble in the mass, e.g. carbon dioxide or by employing etheric oils, which have a high vapour pressure at the increased temperature of the grinding, as constituents of the paste. The substances added must be soluble in the mass and must be such that the mass may be maintained in a liquid state during the colloidal grinding, whilst they do not prevent coagulation upon cooling: e.g. in the case of a silica-water-glycerine gel, tartaric, boric or benzoic acid may be added. The mass may be subjected to a slow stirring during the coagulation.
