Abstract

A gel for use as a catalytic agent and as an adsorbent for gases and consisting of an oxide of aluminium, tin, titanium, or tungsten or a mixture of two or more of them or of silica with one or more of them is prepared by mixing with vigorous stirring a solution of an aluminate, stannate, titanate, or tungstate, with or without a silicate, and an acid in such proportions that no appreciable precipitation occurs at first but the reaction mixture after a predetermined time such as 2 to 5 hours sets completely to a hydrogel. The hydrogel is then broken up, washed, and dried. A quantity of acid in excess of that necessary to combine with the alkali metal present is employed. The drying of the washed hydrogel may be effected in a stream of air at 75-120 DEG C. and then at 300-400 DEG C. or the second stages of the drying may be effected in a vacuum at 75-120 DEG C. Specification 136,543 is referred to.ALSO:A gel for use as a catalytic agent and as an adsorbent for fluids and consisting of an oxide of aluminum, tin, titanium, or tungsten or a mixture of two or more of them or of silica with one or more of them is prepared by mixing with vigorous stirring a solution of an aluminate, stannate, titanate or tungstate with or without a silicate, and an acid in such proportions that no appreciable precipitation occurs at first but the reaction mixture after a predetermined time such as 2 to 5 hours sets completely to a hydrogel.
