Abstract

A porous silica gel, suitable for use as a catalyst or catalyst carrier in the formation of olefines from alcohols or the condensation of alcohols with ammonia, is obtained by preparing a silicic acid hydrogel, thoroughly distributing a finely divided alkaline earth metal carbonate throughout the body of the hydrogel, forming the wet mass, e.g. by extrusion, into individual particles, drying the particles and extracting the alkaline earth metal carbonate therefrom by means of an acid. The resulting gels may be used either alone or when impregnated with aluminium or other oxide.ALSO:A porous silica gel, suitable in particular for use as a catalyst or catalyst carrier, is obtained by preparing a silicic acid hydrogel, thoroughly distributing a finely divided alkaline earth metal carbonate throughout the body of the hydrogel, forming the wet mass, e.g. by extrusion, into individual particles, drying the particles and extracting the alkaline earth metal carbonate therefrom by means of an acid. After treatment with acid the particles may be washed with water and dried. Barium, strontium, calcium or magnesium carbonate may be employed and hydrochloric acid is a suitable acid. The hydrogel may be obtained by the reaction of sodium silicate solution with hydrochloric acid at 20 DEG C., the resulting hydrosol having a pH of 6,8 to 7,6. The resulting gels may be used as carriers for vanadium or platinum compounds for the conversion of sulphur dioxide into sulphur trioxide; the conversion of burner gases at 430--440 DEG C. is referred to. The gels may also be used either alone or when impregnated with aluminium or other oxides in dehydration or condensation reactions, such as the formation of olefines from alcohols or the condensation of alcohols with ammonia or amines.
