Abstract
A catalyst of high mechanical strength and porosity for use in the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide is prepared by grinding a mixture of a silica gel impregnated with a vanadium compound which has been subjected to baking in the presence of acid, with finely-divided sulphur, adding water and kneading, shaping, as by moulding, pelleting or extrusion into a suitable form, drying and removing the sulphur by ignition or sublimation at high temperature. The vanadium-containing silica gel may be made by mixing silica gel with a solution of a vanadium compound, e.g. potassium vanadate, acidifying with sulphuric acid, kneading and baking. Alternatively, the vanadium-containing silica gel may comprise the spent product of a previous catalytic operation. Specification 439,237 is referred to.
