Abstract
A catalyst comprising a mixture of phosphoric acid and a solid adsorbent is first subjected to a compression treatment such as extrusion or moulding and is then calcined under controlled temperature conditions. The major constituent is preferably ortho- or pyrophosphoric acid; the adsorbent may be a siliceous material such as kieselguhr or an aluminium silicate. Carbonaceous constituents may be admixed with the catalyst so as to produce a porous structure on calcination. The calcination temperature may be 180--400 DEG C., or it may be 400--500 DEG C. in which case the material is subsequently rehydrated by heating with steam to 240--260 DEG C. The catalyst is suitable for the polymerisation of olefines and for the reactions described in Specifications 444,672, 464,752, and 464,753. It may be regenerated by steaming at 300--350 DEG C., and then burning off carbonaceous substances with air or a mixture of air and steam, and finally rehydrating with steam at 200--250 DEG C. A treatment with flue gas may follow the first steaming operation. Specification 437,188 also is referred to.
