Abstract
Hydrocarbons suitable for use in motor fuel are obtained by the mixed polymerization of isobutene and propene to produce substantial yields of iso-heptenes. The reaction is effected at temperatures of 93--163 DEG C. and pressures of 34--41 atmospheres in presence of a catalyst comprising an acid of phosphorus, preferably applied to a siliceous adsorbent. The initial materials may be obtained from the stabilizer refluxes obtained in cracking operations. The isobutene may be separated by selective polymerization at a temperature of about 66 DEG C. in presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst and then depolymerized by the same catalyst at a higher temperature. Alternatively, it may be separated by treatment with relatively weak sulphuric acid followed by distillation of the solution to yield ter-butyl alcohol which is dehydrated in presence of aluminium oxide to reform isobutene. Another method of preparation is by dehydrogenation of isobutane obtained in the stabilization of gasoline. The propene may be readily obtained from the stabilizer refluxes by fractionation. Specification 437,188 is referred to.
