Abstract

Urea complexes of straight-chain organic compounds are formed by treating a mixture of organic compounds with urea in the presence of water or of an aqueous alcohol, the water-to-alcohol ratio being from 3 : 1-20 : 1 by volume and separating an aqueous slurry of the crystalline complexes from the raffinate by decantation and centrifuging. The alcohol used, organic compounds treated, reaction conditions and applications of the process are as those described in Specification 671,456. The complexes are preferably decomposed, to regenerate the straight-chain compounds, while still in the form of an aqueous slurry, by methods such as those described in Specification 671,456.ALSO:Oils are refined by treating with urea to form crystalline complexes with the straight-chain components of the oil in the presence of water or of an aqueous alcohol, the water-to-alcohol ratio being from 3 : 1-20 : 1 by volume, and separating an aqueous slurry of the crystalline complexes from the raffinate by decantation or centrifuging. The alcohol used, reaction conditions and applications of the process are those described in Specification 671,456. The complexes are preferably decomposed while still in the form of an aqueous slurry, by methods such as those described in Specification 671,456. In an example, a petroleum pressure distillate of low cetane number boiling from 350 DEG F. to 525 DEG F. was stirred at room temperature with a saturated aqueous solution of urea. The reaction mixture separated into two phases and the lower aqueous phase, containing a suspension of the crystalline complex, was drawn off and heated to 150 DEG F.; the complex decomposed and the aqueous layer formed was separated leaving the diesel fuel of high cetane number.
