Abstract
A catalytic agent comprises a granular, dehydrated, platinized carrier of silica gel or meerschaum or both, to which a promoter has been applied as the final stage of manufacture. Meerschaum is dehydrated by heating to 700--1000 DEG C. before impregnation with the platinum salt; silica gel may be dehydrated either before or after impregnation with the platinum. Additional carriers such as kieselguhr and cellite may be present. The platinum may contain up to 10 per cent of rhodium. After impregnation, the platinum is converted into the metallic form, e.g. in the case of platinum chloride by heating to 450--600 DEG C. which also completes if necessary the dehydration of the carrier. The platinized carrier is then treated with the promoter in the form of finely divided oxide or a suspension thereof or a salt solution. As promoters may be used oxides of metals of Groups 4 to 8, e.g. of iron, chromium, vanadium, arsenic, or sulphates of metals of Groups 1 to 3, e.g. magnesium sulphate, or mixtures of these substances. The catalysts are useful for the production of sulphur trioxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 396,712.
