[Class 1 (i)] Alumina hydrogel is precipitated, preferably from a salt of a volatile acid by means of a volatizable base, washed and without drying is suspended in a solution of a compound containing a catalytic metal in the anion. The suspension is heated to remove volatile material and develop the catalytic properties of the composite. Suitable catalytic compounds are chromates, vanadates, and molybdates, preferably of ammonium. The suspension is preferably evaporated at 120-260‹ C. and then calcined at 540-815‹C.
