Catalytic agents, preparation of; sulphur trioxide, catalytic production of. - In preparing platinum contact masses for use in the production of sulphuric acid, a porous carrier is impregnated with a suitable liquid, brought into contact with a solution of a platinum salt, and dried. The porous carrier may be soluble or insoluble in water, and in this connection reference is made to magnesium sulphate and to porous ceramic masses. The impregnating liquid, particularly when the carrier is water-soluble, may be a volatile organic solvent such as alcohol, and the platinizing solution also may be a solution in a volatile organic solvent. The products may be dried in vacuo. In one example, calcined magnesium sulphate is immersed in alcohol, brought into contact with an alcohols solution of platinum chloride, and dried, and in another example a mixture of clay and kieselguhr is immersed in water and treated with an aqueous solution of platinum chloride.
