Abstract
Siliceous material suitable as a catalyst or a carrier is obtained by treating, in small lump or granular form, naturally occurring indurated (either naturally or by calcination) silicates of alumina, e.g. aluminous fireclays with mineral acids to extract any desired propor-tion of the basic constituents. The residue may be calcined, e.g. at 600-700 DEG C., after the acid treatment. In the case of silicates containing titanium, the extraction may be effected without removal of the titanium content, which may act as a catalyst or assist other catalysts deposited thereon. By selection of silicates containing carbonaceous material, a residue of increased porosity is obtained. According to an example, an indurated fireclay is treated with sulphuric acid, calcined at 600-700 DEG C., moistened with a solution of aluminium nitrate and calcined at 500 DEG C. to deposit an active alumina within the pores of the material.
