Abstract

A colloidal solution of a catalytic material is applied to a porous gel such as silica gel having pores of such size that the water content of the gel at 30 DEG C. when in equilibrium with water vapour at a partial pressure of 22 m.m. will be about 21 per cent. The silica gel prepared as described in Specification 136,543 is suitable, and the catalytic materials applied to it may be for instance metallic copper, silver, gold, iridium, osmium, palladium, and platinum, and the oxides of copper, iron, aluminium, zinc, cobalt, and nickel. The pores of the gel are substantially filled with water (that is to say the actual water content of the gel is about 30 to 40 per cent) at the time of treatment with the colloidal solution, and the treated gel, after washing if desired, is then dried. The drying may be effected as described in Specification 136,543. The filling of the pores with water prevents the breaking up of the granules owing to too rapid adsorption of the colloidal solution and causes the catalytic material to penetrate to a comparatively small depth so that it is mostly distributed over a layer near the surface. In an example, a colloidal solution of platinum obtained by reducing chloroplatinic acid with formaldehyde, is poured over silica gel and the mixture is stirred and heated over a water bath for thirty minutes. It is stated that when a 7 per cent sulphur dioxide-air mixture is passed over 20 grams of this catalyst at 300 C.C. per minute, 90 per cent is converted into sulphur trioxide. Specification 212,065 also is referred to.
