Abstract

332,246. Harrison, C. F. R., Strong, H. W., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. April 17, 1929. Hydrogenation, destructive.-In the destructive hydrogenation at high pressures of coal or other solid carbonaceous material, an intimate mixture of a catalyst therewith is effected by treatment with an aqueous solution of the catalyst which is evenly distributed over the comminuted material, preferably by spraying, the material being agitated during the application. Solutions, preferably saturated, of nickel nitrate or ammonium molybdate are applied in this manner. After draining and it may be drying, the treated material is, if desired, mixed with oil and hydrogenated in the usual manner. Metals or oxides are converted to soluble salts and reduced during hydrogenation to the active condition. The amount of catalyst may vary between 0.01 and 5 per cent. of the weight of material treated. According to the Provisional Specification, only enough liquid is added to wet the particles without making the mass liquid or semi-liquid, and the strength of the solution depends on the amount of moisture initially present in the coal. In some cases hot solutions are employed. Where the soluble catalysts are absorbed by the coal, the excess liquor is removed by centrifuging, filtration, decantation &c.
