Abstract

542,290. Medicines; surgical dressings. VERDIERS, E. E., and LAIRD, T. H. July 1, 1940, No. 11100. [Classes 81 (i) and 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An acid or alkaline colloidal solution of silk or of a mixture of silk and artificial silk is subjected to electrolosis employing aluminium or silver electrodes or electrodes of both metals in multiple sets, whereby the silk fibroin becomes impregnated with one or more metal salts and precipitates in gel form. When silver electrodes are employed silver nitrate may be added to the solution. The product in the form of a gel, sol, dispersion or suspension, powder, or paste is stated to be suitable for use in surgical or medical dressings, and, when impregnated for instance with gold or iron salts, as a medicine.
