Abstract

1,185,685. Acne preparations. QUINODERM Ltd. 6 April, 1967 [11 Jan., 1966], No. 1151/66. Heading A5B. A cream preparation for application to the skin for the treatment of acne, comprising an aqueous phase containing a bactericidal and astringent agent being a quinoline derivative consisting of a salt of 8-hydroxy-quinoline or a halogen derivative of 8-hydroxyquinoline in the presence of an alkali metal salt (e.g. potassium 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate or potassium iodochlor-8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate), a keratolytic and antiseptic agent being benzoyl peroxide or other organic peroxide of similar pharmaceutical activity and being of a particle size compatible with production of a cream, an oil base and an antioxidant comprising a buffered chelating agent, is prepared by forming a mixture of the ingredients and subjecting the mixture to physical treatment to reduce the particle size of the organic peroxide until a cream is obtained while maintaining the temperature of the mixture below that at which the organic peroxide is unstable, e.g. below 20‹C. The oil base may comprise white soft, paraffin wax and at least one non- ionic emulsifying wax and the antioxidant may comprise ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid lactic acid and sodium acid phosphate. The preparation may also contain starch gel and/or hydrocortisone.
