Abstract
An improved catalyst, e.g. for such oxidation reactions as the p contact process for sulphuric acid, which comprises a catalyst such as platinum on a carrier of magnesium sulphate, is obtained by the addition to the carrier of a small proportion e.g. 1 per cent, of a sulphate of an alkaline-earth metal, trivalent iron, thorium, tantalum, or cerium or mixtures of two or more such sulphates. The magnesium sulphate should preferably be free from alkali. Crystalline magnesium sulphate and the promoting sulphate e.g. ferric sulphate, are first heated together to dryness. The product is ground to a fine powder and sufficient water is added to form a thin paste. A further quantity of crystalline magnesium sulphate is added, and the heating process repeated. The mass formed is broken up into granules and screened, or the ground granules may be briquetted or pelletted with or without a suitable binder or lubricant. The product, which contains approximately 1 per cent of anhydrous ferric sulphate, is then platinized in known manner. Examples are given detailing the preparation of platinum catalysts and their use in the manufacture of sulphur trioxide.
