Abstract

Microspheroidal silica is prepared by gelling with gaseous CO2 an alkali metal silicate solution having a silicate content expressed as silica of from 3 to 12% by weight, adding to the gel sufficient mineral acid to adjust the pH to less than 7, then adding a quantity of ammonium hydroxide to raise the pH into the range from above 7 to 9.5, spray drying the gel, and washing the spray dried gel to remove soluble impurities. If desired, the gel may be aged at 21 DEG to 82 DEG C. for a period of up to 3 hours between the initial gelation and the acid treatment and between the acid treatment and the ammonia treatment and it may be aged at the same temperature for up to 6 hours between the ammonia treatment and the spray drying. The product is said to have a surface area of 100-600 m.2/gm. and a pore volume greater than 1 c.c./gm. The preferred alkali metal silicate is sodium silicate and the silicate solution may have a silica to alkali metal ratio of from 3 : 1 to 3.4 : 1. The preferred mineral acid is sulphuric acid. In the washing step, the gel may be washed with a dilute mineral acid of concentration 0.2 to 5% by weight, e.g. 0.5 to 2 DEG B<\>ae sulphuric acid, or an aqueous solution containing 0.5 to 5% by weight of ammonium sulphate. The silica gel may finally be dried to a moisture content of 4 to 15% by weight, the drying temperature being 120-260 DEG C.
