Abstract

A solution of formaldehyde is obtained by heating paraformaldehyde containing at least 15 per cent by weight of water with a liquid aliphatic mono- or poly-hydric alcohol so as to cause the paraformaldehyde to depolymerize and go into solution. In the examples, paraformaldehyde containing 16 per cent water is heated (a) with methanol, and (b) with 1,2-propylene glycol to give clear solutions of formaldehyde.
