Abstract

1 : 4-Dioxane is obtained by treating b b <1>-dihalogeno-diethyl ethers, obtained by dehydrating the corresponding halogen substituted alcohols, e.g. ethylene chlorhydrin, with strong aqueous bases, e.g. sodium hydroxide, preferably in dilute solution and at high temperature and pressure. Bye-products referred to are diethylene glycol, b -chloroethyl vinyl ether, divinyl ether, acetaldehyde, and aldehyde resins.
