Abstract

Hardenable artificial resins are prepared by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in a dilute aqueous solution in the presence of such a concentration of alkali that the resin remains in solution, whereby the entire condensation process is carried out in a single stage to the desired degree of condensation after which the resin is precipitated from solution. In an example, phenol and formaldehyde are condensed in the presence of caustic soda and water and resin is precipitated out of the cool solution by means of acid. U.S.A. Specification 1,187,229 is referred to.
