Abstract
Light-coloured and colour-fast infusible, insoluble condensation products are produced by condensing phenols and aldehydes in aqueous solution in presence of caustic or carbonated alkalis, and adding phosphates or borates or the corresponding acids to form such salts. In examples phenol and formaldehyde are condensed in presence of sodium carbonate and sodium phosphate or in the presence of sodium carbonate, boric acid being afterwards added, and the water expelled and the product hardened. Specifications 1921/08, 21566/08, 159,461, and 165,758 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use of phenols and aldehydes in aqueous solution and describes adding weak acids, such as lactic acid or glacial acetic acid, to the product before hardening. An example also shows the addition of borax to the initial condensation product produced in presence of sodium carbonate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
