Abstract

In the production of resinous condensation products from phenol or its homologues and formaldehyde or its polymers, the phenol and formaldehyde &c. are first heated with an acid condensing-agent until a resin is formed, then more phenol and formaldehyde are added together within a basic condensing-agent and the heating continued. The amount of basic condensing-agent employed is in such excess that after neutralizing the acid used in the first condensation the remainder considerably exceeds 10 per cent by weight of the phenolic body used in the second condensation. Fusible resins soluble in a variety of organic solvents are thereby obtained; if sufficient formaldehyde has been used, the resins may be converted by further heating to insoluble infusible products. According to examples:-phenol or cresol and formaldehyde solution are boiled with hydrochloric acid, the resulting resin is mixed with phenol or cresol, formaldehyde solution, ammonia, caustic soda, and caustic potash, and the mixture boiled; phenol or cresol and formaldehyde solution are boiled with acetic acid, the mass is mixed with phenol or cresol, formaldehyde solution, soap, and a hydrosulphite or sulphite, and the mixture boiled; in a third example, the same ingredients are employed as in the first example, but the proportion of formaldehyde is higher, the resulting resin being transformed into an insoluble infusible product by further heating. Specifications 21566/08 and 3498/11 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of hexamethylenetetramine as an alternative for formaldehyde or its polymers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
