Abstract

Condensation products are prepared by reacting novolaks with condensation products derived from formaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine and urea or mixtures of urea and other compounds capable of reacting with formaldehyde. The novolaks, prepared from phenol and formaldehyde, and also the urea-aldehyde condensates, are prepared under acid conditions. The products may be mixed with filling or fibrous materials such as cellulose at any stage of the process of manufacture and then moulded. In examples a novolak prepared from phenol, formaldehyde and oxalic acid is mixed and reacted with a condensate of (1) urea, with or without the addition of thiourea formaldehyde and oxalic acid that has subsequently been mixed with hexamethylenetetramine or (2) urea, formaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine and oxalic acid with or without the addition of urethane or acetamide to yield resinous products.
