Abstract

255,692. Wade, H., (Karpen & Bros., S.). Oct. 23, 1925. Drawings to Specification. Phenol-aldehyde condensation products. - A fusible soluble condensation product is formed by digesting a phenolic body, such as phenol, a cresol or a naphthol, with a solution of hexamethylenetetramine and ammonium chloride at a temperature of about 100‹ C., the phenolic body being used in such excess that the resin formed contains about 1.5 phenolic groups to each methylene group, and the solution of hexamethylenetetramine and ammonium chloride utilized being that resulting from the interaction of methyl chloride and aqueous ammonia, the large excess of the latter used in the reaction being first distilled off. The ammonia liberated during the formation of the resin is recovered, and the aqueous ammonium chloride is decanted off from the resin and treated with hydrated lime to convert it to ammonia, the ammonia being caused to react with more methylene chloride to produce a further solution of hexamethylenetetramine and ammonium chloride for the continuation of the process. All ammonium chloride is removed from the resin by kneading or agitating it with water, and all water and a part of the free phenol then distilled off, either by boiling or by blowing air through the heated resin. The resin formed is unchanged by boiling, and, after purification, may be converted to an insoluble and infusible resin by heat after the addition of an active methylene body, such as formaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine. Or the resin, after the addition of a methylene body, may be mixed with fillers or taken up in a suitable solvent to form a varnish. The proportions of hexamethylenetetramine and phenol used in the formation of the resin mav be varied, and equimolecular proportions may be employed, but the insoluble infusible resin then formed cannot readily be freed from water and ammonium chloride. A flow sheet of the apparatus is included in the Specification. Specifications 220,985, 235,015, and 246,416 are referred to.
