Abstract

A moulding-powder is prepared by mixing an aromatic amine-aldehyde condensation product with an alkaline solution of a phenol-aldehyde resin in a water-miscible solvent, neutralizing, washing and drying the precipitate. The aromatic amine-aldehyde condensation product is prepared by condensing the amine with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of water at room temperature. The phenol-aldehyde resin is still in the "A" or soluble phase having a cure of 30 to 120 seconds on a 160 DEG C. hot-plate. This resin is dissolved in alcohol or other water-miscible solvent and then added to the amine resin. In an example a resin derived from aniline, hydrochloric acid and aqueous formaldehyde at room temperature is mixed with an alcoholic solution of a resin prepared from phenol, aqueous formaldehyde and ammonia to which has been added an alkali solution such as caustic soda. The alcohol may be replaced by solvent such as acetone or dioxane. The precipitate is neutralized with an acid such as hydrochloric or acetic acids and then washed and dried. Other phenol-aldehyde resins that may be employed to replace that used in example (1) include the condensation product of cresol, paraformaldehyde, triethanolamine and aqueous calcium bromide; cresol, aqueous formaldehyde and ammonia; phenol, aqueous formaldehyde and sulphuric acid; and phenol, paraformaldehyde and hydrochloric acid. Dyes or colouring materials may be added to the resins before or after precipitation and fillers may be added to products before moulding. Specification 396,071 is referred to.ALSO:A moulding powder is prepared by mixing an aromatic amine-aldehyde condensation product with an alkaline solution of a phenolaldehyde resin in a water-miscible solvent, neutralizing, washing and drying the precipitate.
