Abstract

Aromatic phenols such as cresol or phenol are condensed with aldehydes such as formaldehyde in the presence of condensing agents until after precipitation with acid, the plastic mass obtained is soluble in aqueous solutions of ammonia or its derivatives. Suitable condensing-agents include alkali lyes or salts of strong bases with weak acids with or without the addition of sulphites, hyposulphites, or sulphoxylates. The product, if desired with the addition of filling agents, polyhydric alcohols or compounds of ammonia or amines with formaldehyde may be hardened by heating.
