Abstract

A synthetic resin is obtained by treating an amylaceous material such as starch, soluble starch or dextrin with an aldehyde, neutralizing and condensing the product with urea and a phenol. The product is soluble in all proportions in water and becomes insoluble when hardened with heat. It is also soluble in mineral and vegetable oils. In the example, soluble starch is heated with formaldehyde, neutralized and heated with urea, phenol and sodium carbonate. The liquid condensation product may be dried in vacuum or absorbed on cellulose pulp and powdered. Plasticizers may be added. Specification 506,553 is referred to. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the starch-aldehyde condensation product may be condensed with urea or with a phenol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
