Abstract

A moulding composition consists of semi-chemical pulp impregnated with melted or dissolved hardenable phenol, urea, thiourea and/or cyanamide-aldehyde resin. Semi-chemical pulp is the product obtained by the mild chemical treatment of cellulose, e.g. by heating wood chips or shavings, at temperatures below 90 DEG C. and at atmospheric pressure, with dilute caustic soda, then washing and separating the product. In the example, semi-chemical pulp is mixed with an alcoholic solution of a novolak and hexamethylene-tetramine and the resulting mass is dried, shaped and pressed.
