Abstract

Boards are made by acting on finely-divided ligno-cellulose material such as wood with 1/2 -4 per cent of acid in dilute aqueous solution, drying, and subjecting the mass to pressure at elevated temperature. Wood shavings, chips, &c. reduced if necessary in a hammer mill or other apparatus are sprayed and thoroughly mixed with about twice the weight of dilute acid, e.g. sulphuric acid, and are then heated to drive off all free moisture. The material is then placed on a supporting-surface or in a mould and subjected to a preliminary pressure at normal temperatures, and subsequently to the required temperature and pressure to produce a hard material without blistering. The temperature may be 250-400 DEG F., pressure 300 lbs. per square inch, and duration 7-10 minutes.
