Abstract
Boards and like structural articles which can be sawed and otherwise manipulated in the same manner as wood are obtained by heating in a confined space and in presence of acidic material a mixture of impure lignocellulose, urea, and furfural, the lignocellulose being present in major and the urea and furfural in minor proportions; weight percentages specified being 100 parts cellulose, 16.6 parts furfural, 11.2 parts urea and 6.2 parts acid. The urea may be replaced in part, i.e. up to 50 per cent, by other amides and amines, e.g. hexa, aniline, acetamide, thiourea while the furfural may also be partly replaced by butyraldehyde, formaldehyde or other aldehyde. Lignocellulose substances specified are wood flour, vegetable fibres (cornstalk, bagasse), shredded paper. Acids specified are hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric, oxalic; acid salts. Other fillers may be added-sand, mica, asbestos, cotton linters. A mixture of 1.7 parts urea and 1.4 parts water was mixed with 15 parts sawdust and dried; 2.5 parts furfural and 0.5 parts concentrated nitric acid were added. The mix was then heated in a platen press at 135 DEG C. for 10-15 seconds.
