Abstract

In a process for grinding wood shavings and other fibrous material such as straw, in which the material is first softened by steam and then subjected to the action of grinding discs, hot water at a temperature above 80 DEG C. is injected into the apparatus so as to act on the material after it has been softened by the steam but before it reaches the grinding discs. Hydrolizing reagents such as mineral or organic acids or salts thereof may be added to the material either (1) before it enters the grinding apparatus or (2) at the moment of entry into the apparatus or (3) in solution in the hot water. In the first case, a dilute solution of the hydrolizing reagent may be added to the water used to moisten the shavings while in storage, and in the second case the reagent may be added in dilute solution or in powder form. An example quoted for the third case is an 0.5 per cent solution of oxalic acid.
