Abstract
To prevent deterioration of the cellulose during the extraction of wood, wood pulps &c. with nitric acid, the latter contains a substance resulting from the treatment of a lignocellulose material with nitric acid. The acid may be obtained by heating a nitric acid solution with wood substance, and then bringing the acid to the desired concentration by the addition of water or acid; and the acid employed for the extraction may be used repeatedly after suitable adjustment of its concentration. In a p modification, there is added to chemical wood pulp to be refined, finely divided raw wood or mechanical pulp, and the whole treated with nitric acid solution. The acid treatment may be followed by a treatment with alkali, in particular with dilute alkali at an elevated temperature, and such alkali solution may also contain a substance resulting from the treatment of a lignocellulosic material with alkali as described in Specification 438,434. The alkali treatment may be in two stages, preferably first with dilute alkali at elevated temperatures and optionally under pressure, and then with cold, stronger alkali. The products are suitable for the preparation of cellulose esters and ethers and for the manufacture of paper. Specifications 263,938, 312,098, [both in Class 2 (ii)], and 438,435, also are referred to.
